The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has played a crucial role in widening the scope of the so-called spatial turn in the humanities. In the particular context of literary cartography, GIS facilitates the ability to combine close and distant readings in the spatial analysis of literary texts.

This talk will showcase how GIS tools aid in the process of analysing the representation of space in the oeuvre of Catalan writer Manuel de Pedrolo (1918–1990). The particularities of this polygraph author’s corpus (>120 titles) makes the mapping exercise extremely useful, as it almost functions as a micro-literary system created by this one-man literary field. Through charting and visualisation of the spaces represented in his texts, it will explore Pedrolo’s contribution to the (re)construction of the twentieth-century Catalan literary landscape.

Dr Pedro Nilsson-Fernàndez is a lecturer at the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork, Ireland.
