Sofie Sanchez

Sofie Sanchez är paleontolog, docent vid institutionen för organismbiologi och medlem av Center for Photon Science. Sofie använder fotoner för att få tredimensionella bilder av fossiler med hjälp av en bildteknik som kallas tomografi med synkrotronljus.

I en färsk intervju från 2020 med Uppsala universitet förklarar Sophie sin aktuella forskning.

I am interested in the fin-to-limb transition ... so how you have the transition from the fin of the ray-finned fish for example to the limb of a human.

För att studera denna övergång är Sofie intresserad av att titta på benens inre struktur med hjälp av högupplösta tredimensionella bilder som fångas av högenergiljus. Vid submikronupplösning är det möjligt att komma åt benets trabekulära struktur och kärlelement, som är de kanaler där du har blodkärl.

[T]he blood vessels ... supply all the nutrients to the animal and based on their quantification and their orientation you get information about their biology and physiology. And that is really important to understand the life history and how the animal was developing 300 or even more million years ago.
