Disciplinary background: Gender and Post-colonial feminism
Areas of expertise and research areas:
- Post-colonial feminism
- Queer theory
- Cultural studies
- Theories of everyday life
Why did you choose to come to the Centre for Gender Research?
I chose the Centre for Gender Research at Uppsala University because of its strong interdisciplinary focus. My research project is interdisciplinary in nature and the Centre’s specialization in gender studies, cultural studies, queer theory, masculinity studies and theories of embodiment made this an attractive option for me.
Shortly describe your current research project:
This research project investigates the representation of black lesbian lives and homophobic violence as cultural constructs. Coverage of ‘corrective rapes’ and the spectacular nature of violence against black lesbians in South Africa reinforces political agendas that define the lesbian body as ‘unnatural’ and ‘in need of being corrected’. The project employs critical feminist methodologies as a means to deconstruct ideas pertaining to lesbian lives and the homophobic everyday as it is reported in contemporary South African cultural texts.
