– Uppsala is a very good combination of something familiar and something new for me.

(Bild borttagen) Name: Marja Vehviläinen
Home University: University of Tampere
Disciplinary background: Gender Studies in Social Sciences
Visits:  Until March 22nd, 2018

What is your areas of expertise and research areas?
– I have currently two research areas. One is my old research field, Gender in Science and Technology, as I participate in the Tampere research group of the Nordic CoE Nordwit (2017-2022), coordinated by professor Gabriele Griffin from Uppsala.

The second research area is Gendered Everyday Practices connected to Environmental Concerns. I have rich empirical data collected in my previous research project, and I analyze it with the methodologies of materialist feminisms. I am interested in agency, situated knowledge and institutional practices in both research areas.

Why did you choose to come to the Centre for Gender Research?
– I chose to come to Uppsala because of the collaboration in Nordwit centre. During the visit I take time for research and writing, and for the discussion about the empirical research with Minna Salminen Karlsson. The Nordwit works across three Nordic countries, and the visit enables more multifaceted understanding of the practices and institutions in Finland and Sweden, benefitting both the data collection in two countries and the analysis.

Finally, what is the best thing about Uppsala?
– Uppsala is a very good combination of something familiar and something new for me. It is easy to stay in Uppsala, easy to travel here, and easy to collaborate with Nordwit folks. However, Uppsala is also a new setting for me, as I have earlier visited here only briefly. I look forward interesting and inspiring discussions around my both research areas in Uppsala Gender Studies.

Very welcome to us Marja!
