PhD level course announcement: Introduction to the Medical Humanities

The Centre for Medical Humanities invites PhD candidates in biomedicine, health, the humanities, and social sciences to a course introducing the medical humanities as a field of research.

This advanced theoretical and empirical course covers the origins and development of the medical humanities as well as core themes and central challenges in the field. The course is designed to enhance understanding of the different cultures of biomedical and humanities research and the way in which the medical humanities can combine and bridge their perspectives, methodologies, and objectives.

The course provides a basis for performing interdisciplinary studies related to health and medicine. It will enable PhD students to place themselves and their research projects in relation to a larger academic context both in the medical humanities and their respective disciplines, provide a forum for interaction and exchange across disciplines and universities, and create awareness of and engagement in overarching themes and perspectives that are relevant for the field as a whole.

It is organized as a series of seminars held at Uppsala University’s Centre for Medical Humanities, supplemented by written assignments, presentations, and guest lectures.

• Introduction, February 27–28
• Research within MH part 1, March 14–15
• Research within MH part 2, March 21–22
• Research within MH part 3, May 8–9
• Presentations, May 29

Each of the sessions I-IV including readings corresponds to 1 credit point. A final written assignment and presentation give 2 more credit points (session V). It is possible to participate in part of the course.
