What makes autocrats popular? Why do free people willingly choose leaders who will restrict their liberty? A new project believes that the answers may be found in the characteristics of autocratic leadership itself and in the extreme public emotion that connects populations to autocratic leaders. The project focuses on the intimate intersection of politics with everyday life, that is, informal practices and hidden transcripts that allow rulers to manipulate key symbols of their followers, including gender, to engage public emotion and produce assent or the appearance of assent from below.

Jenny White is a social anthropologist and professor at the Institute for Turkish Studies at Stockholm University. A former president of the Turkish Studies Association and of the American Anthropological Association Middle East Section, she has published four books and numerous articles about contemporary Turkish society and politics.
