Up to two researchers in interdisciplinary mathematics
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (CIM) at Uppsala University conducts interdisciplinary research between the mathematical sciences and other areas of science and industry. CIM offers training and expertise in mathematical modeling and computer simulation, see http://www.math.uu.se/cim for further information.
Duties: Research within an interdisciplinary research project, with at least two advisors representing different scientific areas, or one from industry and one from academia. One of the advisors should be active within the mathematical sciences, which includes mathematics, statistics, scientific computing, and the more theoretical parts of image analysis, system identification, and automatic control. The area (which must be different from the first) of the second advisor should guarantee the interdisciplinarity of the project. Some examples of relevant areas include physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, engineering, economics, finance, medicine and pharmacy. The positions can also include other departmental duties (up to 20%).
The researchers are expected to engage actively in the activities of the centre, i.e. seminars, scientific consultation, courses and workshops.
Eligibility: To be eligible for a position as researcher, the applicant must at the starting date hold a Ph.D. degree in a field that is relevant for conducting research in applied mathematics, e.g., mathematics, physics or scientific computing. Candidates with a background in another area of science, e.g. chemistry or biology, with a strong competence and interest in mathematical modeling are also encouraged to apply.
Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
Employment: Temporary employment for two years, full-time employment, and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Acceptance as a researcher within the Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics will be subject to the condition of employment by an appropriate Uppsala University department. The successful candidates may start August 1, 2017, or according to mutual agreement.
Salary: According to agreement.
Further information: Examples of ongoing research projects are presented at CIM's research page http://www.math.uu.se/cim/research/, and the page http://www.math.uu.se/cim/research/postdoctoral-projects/ lists new projects that have been suggested by potential advisors.
Applicants should contact a potential advisor at Uppsala University to discuss potential research projects before submitting their applications.
How to apply: The application should include the following documents:
1. The names of the intended advisors and the project title.
2. A personal letter of maximum one page describing the scientific issues in the project that interest you and how your past experiences fit into the project.
3. Your Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).
4. A copy of your PhD degree diploma (if already obtained) along with a transcript of your grades.
5. List of publications.
6. All other documents that you want to be considered in the evaluation. (Note, however, we do not want any letters of recommendation).
Starting: 2017-08-01 or according to mutual agreement.
