The Department of Government at Uppsala University has about 100 employees and is recognized as one of the leading political science departments among the Nordic countries. The Department conducts research and education in all major fields of political science and development studies. It provides an international environment for research and education where all courses at Master’s level are taught in English, while courses at Bachelor’s level are taught in both English and Swedish. Duties: The position as Associate Senior Lecturer includes teaching and research within the discipline of political science. The position may also include administrative and managerial tasks. Teaching is not expected to amount to more than 50 per cent of the working time. The position as Associate Senior Lecturer aims to qualify the incumbent for a tenured position as a Senior Lecturer.
Period of employment: The position as Associate Senior Lecturer will normally last four years with a possibility to promotion to Senior Lecturer thereafter.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer, the applicant must hold a doctoral degree or possess the equivalent expertise and fulfil the requirements for teaching expertise. Priority should be given to applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no later than seven years prior to the expiration of the application period. To be eligible, applicants must possess the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the position to the highest standards. To be eligible, an applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. The applicants who are unable to teach in one of these languages are expected to acquire this skill within two years.
Assessment: When assessing the eligible applicants’ merit, the highest weight will be accorded to research expertise. In line with the aim to prepare the associate senior professor for a senior lecturer position which requires higher qualifications, the assessment of research- and teaching expertise will primarily be made on the basis of quality. An applicant who has an advantage in terms of numbers of publications which can be explained by the number of years the person has been active as a researcher shall not in itself be decisive for who will be considered the more qualified candidate. All merits invoked by the applicant must be supported with the relevant documentation.
Research expertise: The assessment of research expertise relates to research qualifications in the subject of political science. In assessing research expertise, quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, will also be given consideration. Proven international quality in research is an important merit, for instance through publications in recognized international political science journals.
Teaching expertise: Teaching expertise will be assessed as carefully as research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications and should be well documented so that the quality can be assessed. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be given consideration.
In addition, special consideration will be accorded to the applicant’s ability to contribute to the advancement of science and teaching in his or her field.
Assessment of other skills: Administrative and management skills are important for this position and will be given weight. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, by the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and purposeful manner as well as the ability to assign and respect deadlines. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the ability to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.
Qualifications should be documented so that both quality and scope can be assessed.
