Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
PhD student position in the subject Electrical Engineering with specialization in Signal Processing at the Division of Signals and Systems, Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory.
In recent years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has become a key technology for the evolution of Internet-of-Things (IoT), smart homes and smart factories. Energy harvesting (EH) is an important feature for powering up future WSN. Instead of completely relying on a fixed battery or power from the grid, WSNs with energy harvesting capabilities will collect energy from the environment, by means of solar power, thermic gradients, vibrations, or from radio-frequency signals. EH capabilities will extend the range of applications WSNs can be used for and will thus be of great importance in the area.
The Signals and Systems Division has a well-established line of research in the research area with collaboration with industries such as e.g., ABB Corporate Research. Please see http://www.signal.uu.se/ for further information.
The position will have a focus on signal processing for WSN applications, such as, for example, monitoring- and control of wireless sensor- and actuator networks, modeling of fading characteristics in complex environments, and development of efficient signal processing algorithms. As a member of cross-disciplinary team, you will contribute to providing solutions for future energy harvesting based wireless sensor- and actuator networks.
Your main responsibility will be to pursue your own doctoral studies. The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years, including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with basic skills in signals and systems and signal processing. Skills in automatic control and wireless communications are desirable but not a must. The successful applicant is expected to have a collaborative spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English.
The application must include the following:
- CV, including your relevant academic, professional, and other experience and knowledge.
- Copy of the degree certificate(s) and transcripts of grades with translations in English whenever the documents are not written in Swedish or English.
- Cover letter describing yourself, your research interests and your experience relevant to this position (maximum 2 pages).
- Publications or technical reports (if applicable): Up to two documents, no longer than eight pages each. You can also submit a report you have written in connection with your education. For longer documents such as, e.g., a Master thesis, please provide a summary (abstract) and a web link to the full text.
- Contact information for at least two referees.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
