Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons, of which 200 are employees and the rest consists of guest researchers and students doing research at Master level. Duties: Applicants will develop biomaterials that can be translated into corneal implants into clinic within a few years. These biomaterials should be applicable to the treatment of corneal defects where transplantation is necessary. Duties of the position also include contributing to applications for external research funding together with members of the program and also with their own applications as main applicants. Applicants are also expected to locate appropriate national and international funding opportunities, initiate new applications and establish new national and international partnerships. As part of the position, the researcher will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies and may propose improvements in these programs (max 20 %). In addition, a small part of the duties involve organization of local meetings, conferences and courses to gather students, researchers, teachers and clinics and contribute to the building of a community in biomaterials and bioengineering. Assistance in supervising doctoral students and postdocs, taking responsibility for key laboratory functions and reviewing ongoing costs for the laboratory will also be included.
Requirements: The researcher must have a doctorate in organic chemistry, have documented experience with aptameres and within synthesis of degradable hydrogels for use as artificial cornea. Appropriate candidates should have experience in translational research and some experience in teaching in chemistry and biomaterials. More specific requirements are knowledge in inhibiting vascular growth in cornea and practical experience in the preparation and characterization of suturable and biodegradable strong hydrogels. The applicant should also have a documented experience in nucleic acid chemistry, bioconjugation, biorthogonal reactions, chemozymatic synthesis of functionalized aptamerans, RNA, and SELEX development of new RNA aptamers.
