Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: Ph.D. position in Materials Theory at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: May 2018. Research division: Materials theory.
Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student to work on the development and application of first-principles density functional theory to study properties of graphene and other novel 2D materials. The project involves a number of tasks, e.g., extraction of tight binding parameters from ab initio calculations to use in large scale transport calculations, study of excitonic properties using many body theory, effects of spin-orbit interactions etc. The student is expected to perform large scale computations in high performance supercomputing facilities as well as to develop numerical codes. This project belongs to a Graphene Flagship project involving a number of EU nodes. Therefore, a strong collaboration with other theoretical and experimental groups is highly anticipated.
Research environment: The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials along with model Hamiltonian studies. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about half are Ph.D. students. The work will be carried out under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Biplab Sanyal, Ast. Prof. Johan Nilsson and Prof. Olle Eriksson.
Employment: Starting date for the position is May 2018, or on a date mutually agreed upon. A Ph.D. position is a full-time four-year appointment. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.
Application: The applicant should have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter or solid state physics. Prior experience in ab-initio calculations is a clear advantage. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a prerequisite. The application should include a personal letter carefully explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can be included. Also, two letters of recommendation should be included in the application.
Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply. For more information, please contact: Biplab Sanyal, Ph: +46-(0) 18-471 3624, email: Biplab.Sanyal@physics.uu.se or Johan Nilsson, Ph: +46-(0)701679333, email: Johan.Nilsson@physics.uu.se or Olle Eriksson, Ph: +46-(0)18-471 3625, email: Olle.Eriksson@physics.uu.se.
Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.
Starting date: 01-05-2018, temporary position ending 30-04-2022.
Type of position: Full time position.
Please submit your application by 15 april 2018, UFV-PA 2018/860.
