Doctoral candidate in peace and conflict research with focus on the consequences of election related violence

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The department hosts a dynamic research milieu and is internationally oriented. Currently approx. 70 persons are employed at the Department and some 300-400 students from around the world are enrolled every academic year. Work description: The PhD candidate will be part of a project led by Associate Professor Hanne Fjelde. The project, funded by a Wallenberg Academy fellowship, examines how electoral violence influences the probability of democratic transition and consolidation, as well as the risk of authoritarian reversals.
The holder of the position is to pursue a project that studies the consequences of electoral violence for democratic outcomes – broadly defined. This may include, but is not restricted to, the impact of electoral violence on individual attitudes and behaviour; consequences of electoral violence for women’s participation in electoral democracy; the role of civil society in mitigating harmful effects of electoral violence on democratic governance; or electoral violence in post-conflict societies.
The successful candidate is free to define and develop his or her own project within the broad parameters of the project. A project plan and further information is available upon request (from project leader Hanne Fjelde, firstname.lastname@example.org).
PhD candidates primarily focus on their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department.
Qualifications: Employment as a PhD candidate requires acceptance into the DPCR’s PhD program, which is decided through an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the program.
