Senior research engineer in Biophysical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström laboratory conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 230 employees and has a turnover just over 220 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.
The science within the program Molecular Biomimetics ranges from biophysics and advanced spectroscopy to microbial and synthetic metal-organic chemistry, with special emphasis on light-induced electron transfer reactions. We study mechanistic aspects of redox active enzymes, mainly from photosynthetic organisms, and catalysts for (mainly) water oxidation or hydrogen evolution. The studies in the natural systems constitute the basis for attempts to synthetize metal-organic molecules and materials with structural or catalytic properties that are similar to those of the enzymes active sites. The program has key competence in membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrochemistry, x-ray absorption and optical fluorescence spectroscopy.
Work duties: You will work in an international team on understanding the reaction mechanisms of biological energy conversion enzymes such as photosystem II, nitrogenases and hydrogenases, as well as on functional and structural studies of molecular and material catalysts. You will support our team by setting up, running and maintaining instrumentation, and by writing data analysis software or performing DFT calculations. A focus will be on X-ray spectroscopy and crystallography, which includes travel to synchrotrons and X-ray free electron lasers.
Requirements: PhD in Chemistry or Physics, with specialization in Biophysical Chemistry or Biophysics. Extended practical experience in X-ray spectroscopy, in working with biological samples such as photosystem II and/or in artificial photosynthesis, as well as programming of data analysis and instrument control software is required. The candidate should have experience in DFT calculations and practical experience with FTIR, fluorescence and electrochemistry. Proficiency in English is expected.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
