The division conducts cutting-edge research in biosensors and sensor systems for biomedicine and healthcare; medical engineering and neuroprosthetics; nanoelectronics for next-generation (or brain-inspired) computing; energy scavenging and energy-efficiency electronics; advanced thin film technology.
Background:Thin film materials and surfaces are crucial for development of products with novel functionalities. Uppsala University is part of a new network to provide an ecosystem with the necessary technologies, resources and services to uptake a set of innovative processes to manufacture nano-enabled products and to demonstrate their features. The Uppsala task is to establish ionized reactive magnetron sputtering for low temperature deposition on nanostructured surfaces on semi-industrial scale.
Work description: The research within this project will focus on the growth of thin film oxides on flexible substrates. The work includes process design and materials development of robust nanostructured surfaces especially for optical and self-cleaning applications, and scaling of the deposition process up to large substrates. In many cases, the existing PVD techniques do not provide materials with the required quality. Therefore, ionized variant of reactive sputtering, High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering, will be investigated. The core of the work is on synthesis and characterisation of the thin films with industrial collaborations being an important part of the project. Although the work is mainly experimental, process modelling and understanding the physical mechanisms determining the deposition and growth is also expected.
Duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in the research project and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
Qualifications required: Successful candidates should have a master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, materials science, or equivalent education. Background in surface physics, nanotechnologies, or similar is beneficial. Ability to work in teams is a requirement as well as good oral and written proficiency in English.
