PhD student position in Characterisation of Magnetic Nanomaterials using X-rays and Neutron Scattering

The Division of Solid State Physics is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. At the division, we do both basic and application oriented research that is related to energy and environmental aspects as well as life science via our different research areas. Most commonly, we investigate physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and compounds whether it will be used as coatings for smart windows, gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings, spintronics and biomagnetic applications or to create new magnetic materials for environmentally friendly energy technologies.
Project description: The project is financed by the Röntgen-Ångström cluster which is a German—Swedish research collaboration in structural biology and materials science. In the project we exploit the enormous potenttial of the new research facilities ESS and MAX IV in Lund to study future battery materials. Specifically, we will use the possibilities to study nanoparticle-based battery components at several length scales simultaneously, possibilities that are enabled by the new instruments DREAM (ESS) and CoSAXS (MAX IV). Having a focus on iron-based materials we will develop methods to study the chemistry of the batteries by following the changes at the atomic and nanoscopic levels in the structure and magnetism of the battery components. This will be carried out by looking how the materials scatter X-rays and/or neutrons at different angles (small-angle and wide-angle). Within the project we will also use and develop experimental cells that will allow the electrochemical cycling of the battery (charging/discharging) while measuring magnetism or while irradiating with X-rays or neutrons (in operando studies). This project will be carried out in close collaboration between Uppsala University, MAX IV laboratory, Universität zu Köln, and the European Spallation Source ESS.
Work duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
The work tasks in the research project of this PhD position involve in-operando characterisation of the battery materials using magnetometry and in-operando structural determination using X-ray and/or scattering, preparation of battery assemblies and also assisting in the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles.
Qualification requirements: MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or corresponding degree within related research field. We require knowledge and skills in scattering techniques and magnetic materials. Experience with nanoparticle synthesis or electrochemical testing of batteries are meriting.
We require very good oral and written proficiency in English.
The applicant needs to be determined, structured and able to work efficiently both individually and in groups.
Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
