The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The Department of Peace and Conflict Research is now looking for a research assistant for a joint position in the projects “The Politics of Protection” (PI Lisa Hultman) and the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP).
Tasks:
Tasks with UCDP will include collecting and coding information about organized violence, and updating texts in the UCDP Encyclopedia. Other tasks may be added based on the needs of the UCDP.
Within the project Politics of Protection the RA will provide important support to the project, primarily through data collection, data management, data analysis, visualization of data, literature reviews, editing book or article manuscripts, and other research related tasks. The position may also entail certain administrative tasks.
Required qualifications:
A master exam within peace and conflict studies is needed, to guarantee an advanced understanding of theories and concepts concerning war and peace, as well as an in-depth understanding of the research process.
The following are also requirements;
- Good knowledge of theories on political violence and peace operations
- Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
- Good knowledge of the conflicts in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger
- Proficiency in R
- Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
- Documented ability to work independently
- Very good English in speech and writing
- Good analytical skills
- Good ability to collaborate
