The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. Duties/project description: IceCube is a neutrino telescope in operation at the geographic South Pole. The telescope consists of about 5000 optical modules observing one cubic kilometre of the very clear ice in the Antarctic glacier. IceCube detects neutrinos with energies from MeV up to a few PeV from the most extreme environments in the Universe. More information can be found at www.icecube.wisc.edu. The IceCube collaboration is planning to increase the size of the current array in order to enhance the sensitivity of the detector. The successful candidate will work on the simulation and hardware development for the next generation optical sensors to be used in this extension.
Requirements: We are looking for a qualified and highly motivated candidate with a masters degree or equivalent in physics or a related field and with an interest in working at the intersection between astrophysics and particle physics. A strong academic record and good communication skills in English, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, is required.
Additional qualifications: Good programming and data analysis skills are a benefit but there is also room to improve your skills. Experience in astrophysics, neutrino physics, hardware and/or detector development is a merit.
