Two researchers in Nanopore technology for biomolecule sensing

Electrification, digitalisation and health technology are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 130 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.
The positions will be at the Division of Solid State Electronics, the Department of Electrical Engineering. They are each meant for one year, with the possibility of prolongation for another year.
Project description: This nanopore technology project aims at combining nanoelectronics and nanofluidics to enable biomolecule analysis in a parallel and massive manner. The research outlined in this project is part of the division’s focus area on life-science bioelectronics in many areas such as in diagnostics and monitoring of diseases. Here sensing of biomolecules at low concentrations such as DNA and proteins is instrumental. The positions involve fabrication of nanopores based standard silicon technology that is the base for integrated circuits (IC chips). The research will be performed in a multidisciplinary environment therein scientists of complementary backgrounds are available.

- Design and fabrication of nanopores in array form based on standard silicon technology in the cleanroom laboratory of Myfab-Uppsala.
- Characterisation of the nanopores both by physical means with the assistance of a range of analysis methods such as SEM, TEM, and electrically with the help of ionic current measurement and calculation.
- Characterisation of the nanopores for biomolecule analyses especially with DNA and protein molecules.
- Simulation, based on Comsol or other software packages, for assistance in nanopore design as well as in interpretation of characterisation results.
- The applicant must hold a Doctoral degree in Technical Physics Electrical Engineering and / or Materials Science with a focus on semiconductor components and electronics, or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to such degrees.
- Experience, supported by scientific publications, in silicon technology, nanopore fabrication and characterisation.
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
