PhD student in applied geophysics with focus on reflection seismic methods
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the earth science area and several of the department"s programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.
Geophysics is about "looking into" and understanding the Earth"s structure, its history and processes-based on measurements of the Earth"s physical properties. In geophysics we use quantitative physical methods to investigate the Earth and its environment.
PhD candidate will conduct research within a series of planned projects inside and outside Sweden sponsored by a number of industry and research funding organizations with focus on reflection seismic imaging for natural and energy-storage exploration. Modern sensing methods on surface and boreholes will be experimented. The PhD candidate will work within a larger research team including experts from different countries. In the continuation of the PhD study, additional experiments and imaging solutions are also envisaged.
We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has an academic magister/master- or engineering degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, geology, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (i.e. a degree at advanced level (Master"s level) or fulfill the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level or the equivalent). Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The project includes fieldwork and the candidate should be willing to spend time outdoor for data collection alone and/or together with other people. The position is full-time for four years and may be extended due to research or teaching assistantship up to 20%.
Experience in seismic field data acquisition, working with seismic data, Linux/Unix and programming skills are important and will be considered a merit. A driving license is a merit as this may be needed at field work.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
