PhD student position on synthesis and study of low-dimensional composite systems based on magnetic oxides

Admission to PhD studies in Engineering Science with specialization in Solid State Physics
The Division of Solid State Physics is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. At the Division of Solid State Physics, we perform both basic and application-oriented research related to energy and environmental aspects in different research areas. We investigate physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and compounds whether it be for smart windows, gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings, spintronics, and biomagnetic applications or to create new magnetic materials for environmentally friendly energy technology. Within the Magnetic materials research group, we are studying a wide range of magnetic materials, including magnetic oxides and oxide-based composites, with properties that make them interesting for applications in biotechnology, energy technology, and spintronics.

The overall goal of the project is to design new composite materials based on correlated electron oxide systems and two-dimensional materials to achieve increased functionalities related to applications in the electronics and environmental areas. The project includes the synthesis of such composites, as well as the characterization and investigation of their physical properties (magnetic and electrical). The project is expected to generate new knowledge and create ways to design new materials for the fields of nanoelectronics, magnetoelectronics, spintronics, and magnetocalorics. The project includes studies of both zero-dimensional nanocomposites (particulate systems) as well as nanostructured thin films and hybrid structures.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 10%).
The tasks within the research project described above includes synthesis of low-dimensional composite systems based on correlated electron oxide systems and two-dimensional materials, as well as in-depth structural, magnetic, and electrical characterization of their properties. This involves the use and handling of advanced experimental equipment, both for synthesis and for characterization, and in some cases the development of experimental methods and data analysis adapted to the project. Dissemination of the acquired knowledge through scientific articles in international scientific journals is also included in the tasks.
Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or equivalent education in adjacent areas.
We require very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Personal qualities, such as high enthusiasm, self-drive and initiative, problem-solving attitude, the ability to manage and run scientific projects and to simultaneously interact with other researchers are very important. The applicant needs to be determined, structured, and able to work efficiently both individually and in groups.
Basic knowledge and skills in material characterization and completed course in quantum mechanics will be considered to be strong merits. Knowledge of correlated electron oxide systems, two-dimensional materials, experience in chemical synthesis techniques, thin film deposition methods, cleanroom-based nanofabrication, and magnetic and electrical transport property measurements are meritorious.
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
