Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology

The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History is a multidisciplinary research and teaching department characterised by cross departmental collaboration. At the department, teaching and research take place in the subjects of Archaeology, Osteology, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Egyptology and Global Environmental History, and also hosts Swedigarch, the National Research Infrastructure for Digital Archaeology. The department is divided into two campuses, one situated in Uppsala and one in Visby (Campus Gotland). Archaeology and Osteology are fundamental parts of our bachelor programs and the subjects can be studied from the introductory A-level up to the postgraduate levels. The subject of Archaeology engages around thirty teachers, researchers and doctoral students both in Uppsala and Visby. Since the education in archaeology sometimes include students at both campuses, parts of the teaching may take place via video link. Training in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology is only available at Campus Gotland and currently includes four employees and an osteological laboratory with human and faunal reference collections. Research within the subject contributes to knowledge about former human habitats and health, to knowledge about animal husbandry, past environments and climate as well as adding to discussions concerning sustainable development. Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology is in an expansive phase. Since the bachelor's program in archaeology and osteology was established three years ago, the specialisation in osteology has seen increasing student numbers. In the next phase, we want to further strengthen this environment by recruiting an employee who wants to contribute to this positive development by conducting quality-driven teaching at basic and advanced levels, as well as actively working to develop the research profile Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology. We are therefore looking for a permanently employed Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology in the scope of 100% of a full-time position.
Teaching, supervision and examination, as well as research and administrative duties in archaeology and faunal and human osteology. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision in all levels. Teaching takes place through lectures, seminars and practical laboratory work at all levels. Part of the teaching may take place in the field or via video link. The research duties aim to strengthen and develop the department's research profile in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology in collaboration with the department's other subjects and laboratory environments. Research also includes active work in applying for external research grants and thereby contributing to increasing the proportion of externally funded research as well as to increased recruitment of doctoral students and researchers at the department. Additional duties that may be relevant are various types of management assignments, for example work as Study Director, or collegial assignments within the University at large. Keeping up with the development of the subject and societal developments that may impact the subject and the university is also considered a work duty.
Eligible to be employed as a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology is someone who has completed a doctorate in Archaeology, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Egyptology, Historical Osteology, Archaeoosteology, Osteoarchaeology, Biological anthropology, Archaeozoology, Archaeobiology, or who has the equivalent competence, and who has demonstrated pedagogical competence. It is required that academic competence, pedagogical competence and the candidate’s professional skills are relevant to the duties and subjects that are central to the position.
Candidates must have completed training in tertiary-level teaching of no less than ten weeks. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment. To qualify as a supervisor of doctoral students, the candidate’s pedagogical training must include postgraduate supervisor training.
The documented ability to teach and administrate in Swedish and English is required. If there are special circumstances, those who are unable to manage teaching and administrative duties in Swedish may be expected to obtain this ability within two years.
The applicant must have the personal qualities required to fit the position well. In this case, such personal qualities are flexibility, a good ability to work together with colleagues and a sense of responsibility, as well as the ability to lead work teams and courses.
Assessment criteria for candidates who meet the eligibility requirements
In the selection of eligible applicants, weight will be assigned to research expertise, teaching expertise, and administrative and management expertise. The assessment of pedagogical competence will be accorded the same weight as the assessment of academic competence.
Academic competence refers to research qualifications. When assessing academic competence, primarily the quality of the research will be considered. The scope of the research, mainly depth and breadth, will also be accorded significance. In the assessment of academic competence, special weight will be accorded research qualifications within the osteological research field of archaeology. Meriting is competence in areas such as human osteology, animal osteology, paleopathology and cremated skeletal material, but also competence in other laboratory methods such as aDNA and/or bioinformatics.
Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, as well as the ability to attract funding for research in competition with other researchers will be accorded great significance. The documented ability to interact within the academic community as well as with the local community will be accorded significance.
Pedagogical competence refers to educational and teaching qualifications. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, special weight will be accorded osteological teaching with proven teaching experience in bioarchaeology/human osteology and archaeozoology/animal osteology. Meriting is teaching experience in areas such as paleopathology and cremated skeletal material, but also other laboratory methods such as aDNA and/or bioinformatics and field teaching. Teaching in the archaeology and prehistory of Scandinavia or the Baltic Sea region is also meritorious. In addition to academic teaching experience, educational and teaching qualifications from other activities that involve for instance supervision, in-service training or mentoring programmes will be considered. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, primarily pedagogical quality will be considered. Scope, breadth as well as depth, will also be accorded significance.
Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link research in the subject to teaching, subject-specific didactics and higher education pedagogy will be accorded significance. The ability to interact on higher education pedagogical issues with parties within and outside the university will also be considered pedagogical competence.
Administrative competence and leadership skills are important to the position and will be accorded considerable significance. Administrative competence may be demonstrated by, for instance, the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-adapted manner, as well as through the ability to establish and keep to a time plan. Competence includes overall planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects relevant priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awareness of relevant goals and quality expectations.
Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to achieve common goals effectively. The ability to coordinate a group as well as to generate commitment, participation and job satisfaction, and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated competence.
Collaborative competence is demonstrated through the ability to plan, organize and carry out projects in collaboration with the local community. Popularised research, public debate and lectures are examples of collaborative interaction with the local community. The ability to convert knowledge exchanges with the local community into activities that are relevant to the development and quality of education is also considered collaborative competence.
All qualifications must be documented in a way that makes it possible to assess their quality and scope.
