Social Justice

The Social Justice initiative is about promoting interdisciplinary research on the social and political dimension in Agenda 2030. Justice and equality are a fundamental prerequisite for a sustainable society. This has been shown by such organisations as International Panel on Social Progress (IPSP) and The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) through impact assessments for various future scenarios. Different parts of society are dependent on each other and must work together in order for society to become more sustainable. The ecological, economic and social.

The Social Justice initiative has a clear connection to Global Health, which can be said to be a combination of classic patient-focused medicine and work for improved health on a society level. Social sustainability is largely about how our rights can affect the possibility of good health. The Social Justice initiative must develop research in the social justice area linked to health. Here, health is not defined solely as individuals’ absence of illness, but is about each person achieving their full potential. Society’s full potential is thereby also achieved. This perspective is of significance both on a local and a global level.

Focus areas

Within the Social Justice initiative, cooperation is currently planned within three areas:

Threats to life and health

  • Managing threats to life and health and explaining vulnerability and resilience
  •  Social safety net and welfare policies during crises

Social exclusion

  • Social exclusion as an obstacle to sustainability
  • Mobilisation for social justice – different opportunities and challenges between demography and society
  • Maintenance of inequities in health and their consequences for the democratic discourse

Methods for managing social injustice

  • Education as a cause or solution to social injustice
  • The effects of new technologies on health and equality. Integration of a social dimension in renewable energy and circular economy
  • Transformative learning as a model for promoting human potential. What works when?
  • Implementation of evidence for hastening social change
