Entry requirements

120 credits within the Master's Programme in Molecular Biotechnology Engineering including Independent Project in Molecular Biotechnology.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Carefully and systematically plan, carry out and document experimental work within a research or development project
  • Independently search, evaluate and compile relevant theoretical information that is required for the practical training
  • In a report written in English, correctly summarise and formulate personal conclusions based on results from the implemented project
  • Handle text and present data (as tables and figures where relevant) and references according to given instructions
  • Reflect on the learning process and the potential need for additional personal acquisition of knowledge

Content

The student, in consultation with the co-ordinator of the course, chooses a suitable supervisor and a location for the placement. The supervisor informs the student about the specific aims and methods of the current research/development at the department/ authority/company. The student gets an opportunity to participate in practical work at the workplace, under proper supervision. The student also participates in internal lectures, seminars and meetings where relevant topics for the placement are discussed. The student takes responsibility and initiative in order to obtain adequate theoretical background for the practical work. Appropriate literature for the theoretical assignment is decided by the supervisor after consultation with the student.

Instruction

Individual supervision at the work-place and by the co-ordinator at the department responsible for the course.

Assessment

The practical work is presented orally at the work-place. The practical work is also to be presented in a written report, following specific instructions. Approval and a passing grade for the course as a whole require approval of the theoretical examination as well as of the written report.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

The course cannot be included in the degree together with 1MB774 or 1MB775.
