Decisions and guidelines
The course is part of the Master's Programme in Sociology of Education. It can also be given as an independent course.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
- connect key concepts, methodological points-of-departure and research findings to each other in Pierre Bourdieu’s work in the area of sociology of education;
- analyse how theoretical concepts, methods and results are related to each other in Bourdieu’s empirical studies and discuss how these studies have developed over time;
- make use of some of Bourdieu’s key concepts in the analysis of issues or phenomena pertaining to the domain of sociology of education as well as motivate the choice of the selected concepts.
Content
The course focuses on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of education, taking as a point of departure the sociologist’s central work on education.
Emphasis is given to:
- key concepts, methodological points-of-departure and main contributions in terms of findings or results;
- the relationship between concepts, methods and research findings;
- the use of key concepts in the analysis of issues and phenomena pertaining to the domain of sociology of education.
Instruction
The course consists of a series of lectures and seminars.
Assessment
The assessment is based on a written assignment as well as on active participation during seminars.
