Entry requirements:
40 credits within the bachelor program in Mechanical Engineering.
- Responsible department: Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Learning outcomes
After a successfully completed course the student should be able to:
- explain basic methodological and technological concepts for the methods: plastic machining, metal cutting, welding, powder metallurgy fabrication, form-manufacturing (casting, forging, injection moulding, etc.),
- describe the relationship between different manufacturing processes and the product characteristics (eg, tolerances, surface smoothness, manufacturing cost),
- prepare simpler components for fabrication with CNC machine tools, including tool selection, calculating cutting data, and the development of control software,
- use basic engineering technical measurement techniques to verify product functionality and quality,
- independently utilize knowledge about manufacturing methods for defining the product geometry.
Content
Plastic processing: Analysis of energy, power and force requirements for e.g. forging, pressing, bending, and thread and plate production.
Cutting processing: Analysis of cutting procedures, tool wear and life length, with an emphasis on lathing, cutting (3-axial and 5-axial), drilling and grinding.
Welding: Manual arc and gas welding (MMA, MIG/MAG, TIG).
Production technical measurement methods: Measurement gear, gauges, jigs, measurement devices and modern measurement machines.
Other machining methods such as: FFF, spark machining EDM and EDWC, Electrochemical machining (ECM), laser and liquid jet cutting.
Powder metallurgy: Pulverframställning, pulverpressning, sintring och efterbearbetning.
Rapid prototyping: Methods for manufacturing of 3D machine elements of polymers and metals..
Manufacturing of plastic elements: Injection moulding, compression moulding and extrusion.
Instruction
Lectures, assignments, laboratory, and field study/visit at a fabrication facility.
Assessment
Written exam (6 credits). Project (3 credits). Laboratory (1 credit).
