A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university

Learning outcomes

The student should, after completing the course, be able to,

regarding knowledge and understanding

• discuss and critically reflect on the role of cultural heritage for economic and social dimensions of sustainable development,
• reflect on conservation economy and understand in depth how cultural heritage can contribute to regional development aspects,
• demonstrate in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge about different designs, models and methods for the study and evaluation of cultural heritage and sustainable growth,

regarding competence and skills

• independently analyse, assess and handle complex conservation economy phenomena, issues and situations,
• independently search, plan and use relevant information as a basis for carrying out qualified tasks using adequate methods for the purpose of preserving, re-using and developing historic environments,
• apply and integrate relevant knowledge for the purpose of adaptive re-reuse of various historic environments,
• draw conclusions about how conservation can contribute to regional development and form a resource for society in different respects,

regarding judgement and approach

• relate to both national and international conservation problems and solutions, and
• relate to different perspectives and presentations of cultural heritage and regional development for the purpose of drawing both general and specific conclusions.

Content

The focus of this course is cultural heritage as a driver for sustainable growth. The role of cultural heritage in specific systems-wide cultural districts, regional fields of creative power, as well as economic impacts of conservation and adaptive re-use of the built cultural heritage is treated. The course also highlights and problematises issues such as: conservation - utility – development, as well as models for how cultural heritage can strengthen social economy. Special emphasis will be laid on the adaptive re-use of cultural heritage.

Instruction

The course will consist of seminars, lectures, and group work. Active participation in seminars and group work is compulsory. Absence from any of these will need to be compensated.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on active participation in seminars and the submission of written assignments. Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system. The following grades will be used: Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with distinction (VG).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
