Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Explain the basics of graphic design theory and typography terminology
  • Perform a simple analysis of graphics and text
  • Demonstrate good skills in the area of graphic design for web production
  • Plan the production of a graphic design solution for use in a web context
  • Describe and reflect on their own design process, and
  • Display good understanding of the differences between web design and, for example, design for print or moving images.

Content

The course covers the theory underpinning graphic design, and allows students to implement their theoretical understanding in an individual project. Guidance and mentoring is provided for coursework and assignments.

An individual project where the task is to redesign an existing website is carried out, with support and tutoring available throughout.

Instruction

The course is given both as a campus course, on Campus Gotland, and as an online course. The campus based version of the course has regular taught classes in the form of lectures, seminars and tutoring sessions. The online version of the course is web based and offers the equivalent learning materials and interaction with the teacher and fellow students online.

For the most part, the teaching takes the form of mentoring and guidance of the students' work on assignments and coursework.

Assessment

Examination is based on four graded assignments. The grading scale on the course consists of the expressions Pass with Distinction, Pass or Fail.

Achieving a Pass grade on the course, requires a Pass grade on each of the assessed elements in the course. To achieve a Pass with Distinction, a deeper understanding of the underpinning theory is additionally required, as demonstrated by applying said theory in the assignments.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating or plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.

NOTE: Only completed courses can count toward a degree.
