Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the participants should have gained a better understanding of the importance of physics for medical diagnosis and treatment.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain and describe the physical concepts for ultrasound, laser light, X-rays, gamma rays, various particle beams, and how these are used in medical diagnosis and treatment
  • explain how magnetic resonance imaging works
  • explain how nerve signals are transmitted electrically and how this can be measured.

Content

X-ray diagnostics including tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diagnostics and treatment by ultrasound, positron emission tomography (PET), therapy with lasers, X-rays, gamma radiation and particle beams.

Instruction

The course is a distance learning course. Participants are provided with study material and assignments through Studentportalen.

Assessment

Continuous examination by solving hand-in assignments.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
