Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe various kinds of materials (metals, polymers, and ceramics, as well as composites and semiconductors), and account for their characteristics,
  • account for the relationship between the structure and mechanical properties of various materials,
  • manage Swedish as well as English basic terminology of relevance for this,
  • account for some historical milestones of importance for materials engineering and science,
  • describe some technological fields specifically targeted by the programme (i.e., surface and thin film technology, and advanced microsystems technology),
  • account for the importance of materials research and development to relevant companies in Sweden,
  • use the computer systems required in the initial courses of the programme, as well as know and apply the corresponding regulations and rules for use of the University IT systems.

Content

Fundamental concepts, research and development, and industrial activities in the field of materials science and engineering. Guest lecturers, from both industry and the university, presenting recent fields of application and research. Study visit to companies and/or research divisions at the Ångström Laboratory. Information about later programme courses and their role for the programme. Introduction to the library and its services. The university's IT systems, and ethics in using them. The course evaluation system employed at the programme. Equal opportunities with respect to the Discrimination Act.

Instruction

Lectures, study visits, computer exercises, laboratory session, minor project work in a group.

Assessment

Written examination, as well as written and oral presentations (4 2,5 credits). Presentation of computer exercises (1 hp). Active participation in study visits, project work and laboratory session (1,5 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
