Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • analyse an existing micro-construction that may also have elements of nanotechnology,
  • suggest and give grounds for an improved construction,
  • prepare documentation needed for fabrication and act as a client during component fabrication,
  • develop a test plan, construct a test setup and perform an evaluation of the component.


The task, as a part of a group project, is to develop a construction according to a given specification. The suggested construction is to be adjusted in accordance with manufacturing restrictions, as well as evaluated using simple modelling. Written reports describing both manufacturing and modelling will be produced. An test plan describing construction verification will be made and documented. After a review, the construction and the test plan will be finalized. The project group will, within given limits and in collaboration with the manufacturer, prepare documentation needed for component fabrication. The component will be fabricated under supervision from the students in the project group. The latter will plan desig and construct a test setup as well as characterize the component. The results will be summarized in a report and a presentation. Training in technical/scientific literature search as a part of a literature study is provided.

Evaluation of the written design documentation and fabrication documentation (4 credits). Final report as well as oral presentation and opposition (6 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
