The course is given as a freestanding course.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree with Turkic languages as the main field of study or a Bachelor's degree with another language subject as the main field of study including Turkic languages 1 and Turkic languages 2.

Learning outcomes

To earn the grade Pass, on completion of the course students should at least be able to:

  • give an account of the classification of the Siberian Turkic languages and place the languages and their varieties in the Turkic language family;
  • give an account of the demography of the Siberian Turkic languages with regard to number of speakers and the possibility of the languages to survive;
  • give an account of the historical development of the Siberian Turkic languages;
  • give an account of primary sources for and research publications on the Siberian Turkic languages;
  • describe the writing systems of the Siberian Turkic languages;
  • describe and compare the basic grammar and vocabulary of the languages;
  • describe language contact between the Siberian Turkic languages and non-Turkic languages;
  • read, transcribe, translate and analyse selected texts written in the Siberian Turkic languages.

Content

The course comprises classification, description and comparative analysis of the Siberian Turkic languages. Furthermore, the course gives skills in reading, transcribing, analysing and translating selected texts.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and assessment components. The students' own learning activities are crucial during the course.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components:

  1. continuous oral and written assignments
  2. a take-home examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other directives

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent components have been studied in another course included in the degree.
