120 credits within the natural sciences, medical, biomedical, civil engineering programmes or equivalent education. All educations need to include chemistry or biochemistry of 30 credits, and cell/molecular biology and genomics of 30 credits.

After the course, the student should be able to
Knowledge and understanding
- describe the theoretical background of the planned scientific project
- explain methods and approaches applied within the field of study.
Skills and abilities
- independently plan and carry out scientific experiments within the subject.
- independently compile,critically analyse and evaluate scientific information within the research area including obtained results.
- search, interpret and compile relevant scientific literature.
- present the obtained results orally and in written in a structured way in correct scientific language.
- communicate and discuss theories and research results within the research field with senior researchers.
Evaluation skills and attitudes
- apply an ethical and reflective scientific approach
- demonstrate the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team in research.
The course comprises an experimental study and studies of relevant scientific literature. The project is carried out under individual supervision in close connections within ongoing research in a research group at the Department.
The teaching is given in the form of laboratory work and self-study under supervision. Furthermore included is active participation at seminars that connect to project's subject study field after agreement with supervisors. The course can be given in English.
A passing grade requires passed oral presentation within a seminar in the research group and passed written report. The report should have the form of a scientific essay approved by the examiner.
The grade is given by the examiner after consultation with the supervisor.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
