    Outline for distance course: Communication between teachers and students is done using the learning management system and e-meeting tools. A computer with a stable internet connection and webcam is required. A full day lab will be done on campus in Uppsala.

Entry requirements: 120 credits in science or engineering with Electromagnetism I and Analogue Electronics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

About the course

The course introduces you to RF/microwave analysis methods, design and measurement techniques. Scattering parameters are defined and used together with the Smith chart to characterise and use passive and active devices. Different design procedures for solid-state amplifiers, including stub and lumped matching networks are presented: classes of operation, introduction to load pull measurements, harmonically tuned and Doherty amplifiers, along with the design of power combiners and measurement methods. Applications of solid-state power amplifiers are also introduced. Microwave computer-aided design (CAD) methods are introduced by means of the realisation of a solid-state amplifier, including design, manufacturing and measurement. Project work serves to develop student engineering approach and report writing skills.

The course targets people working in related areas who want to expand their horizon working with solid-state power amplifiers for accelerator or other emerging industrial applications using high power microwaves.
