About the course

In this advanced course, you are introduced to various electromagnetic methods to study both shallow and deep structures in the Earth's crust and upper mantle. You learn what information electromagnetic methods can provide on various geological and hydrological targets discussing examples from groundwater prospecting, the sustainable provision of minerals and renewable energy. The theoretical foundations of electromagnetic prospecting methods are emphasised.

Analytic solutions of Maxwell's equations are derived for simple point sources and layered models. 2D and 3D models are solved by finite element, finite difference or integral equation methods. Earth response functions for plane waves are used to estimate the complicated distribution of electrical conductivity in the Earth as a proxy to the geological structure.
