About the course

Seismic waves from earthquakes provide a mean both to understand how earthquakes are created and to study the interior of the Earth. This is an advanced course that focuses on the analysis of seismic waves in order to locate earthquakes, determine the motion on the fault and understand the physics causing that fault motion. The course addresses theories and models for the earthquake source and the radiated seismic waves, and the techniques and algorithms used to analyse those waves. Applications to both large natural earthquakes and microearthquakes, created when the rock is fractured in e.g. mines or geothermal projects, are discussed.
