About the course:

How can a wide range of inspiring examples and new perspectives on learning and knowledge concretely change how we organise and practice education on different levels? What do different models of collaborative or social learning have to offer when working towards a better and sustainable world?

In order to seek answers to these questions, you will explore and review several innovative approaches to education and learning for sustainability. Particular emphasis will be given here to interdisciplinary pedagogical practices. The themes that will be taken up range from education for sustainable development to active student participation, and from environmental education and to philosophy of education. In the course opportunities and limits of different educational models and philosophies are explored and discussed. We also take a closer look at CEMUS's student-led educational model and at how CEMUS, for the past 25 years, has challenged and impacted learning, knowing and doing in a rapidly changing world.

The course then proceeds by zooming in on your own role and options for working concretely with education and sustainability. More practical aspects will be discussed such as the planning and implementation of educational opportunities for different target groups, promoting learning, critical thinking and creativity. At a more overarching system level you discuss and design different strategies for how education can contribute to sustainable development now and in the future.

Throughout the course you are encouraged to actively work and communicate in new and original ways, and at different levels. In the work during the course, theoretical understandings will provide the basis for developing a specific project in an educational and sustainability context.
