About the course
The course gives an introduction to Akkadian grammar, phonology and cuneiform, through seminars, exercises and study of texts. After a few weeks, original texts begin being read in cuneiform: a collection of laws or judgments authored by king Hammurapi of Babylon about 3800 years ago, and a couple of his building inscriptions. These texts are valuable as sources of information on life and the perception of the world in his state. The course is assessed in part by conducting a brief, comparative study in which you compare one or two linguistic features in Akkadian with features in one or more languages you have already studied.
