About the course
Is democracy in danger? Since the 9/11 attacks in 2001, there has been talk of a crisis of liberal democracies, where preoccupation with security issues and populist movements has destabilised concepts such as truth, facts, human rights and the common good. The course provides a historical and theoretical perspective on the crisis of contemporary liberal democracy, with a particular focus on political-rhetorical theory. You will become familiar with contemporary renowned thinkers as well as with less known works in the field.
The hypothesis of the course is that behind irrationality and randomness there are patterns that may be difficult to explain within the framework of traditional rhetorical and political theory, but that can be both described and understood from a rhetorical philosophical-anthropological point of view.
