About the Subject
Environmental science is a broad and comprehensive subject area. Environmental issues concern human interactions with the environment and include both natural sciences and social sciences. Environmental scientists need to have a system understanding and be able to use interdisciplinary methods and approaches.
Environmental scientists with knowledge in the natural sciences, such as chemistry, biology, ecology and earth sciences, also need to have knowledge in the social sciences and competence to work with complex environmental issues from a number of different perspectives. Our use of nature and natural resources affects life sustaining systems and has consequences for the well-being of both us humans and other organisms. In environmental science, ethical, economic, legal, political and cultural aspects of environmental problems are addressed, which makes this area exciting and constantly relevant.
Environmental scientists work as strategists, coordinators, managers, government employees, consultants, etc. in government agencies, as well as in companies and organisations.
