Who is required to pay fees?

If you are a citizen of a country outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, you are required to pay application and tuition fees to study at a university in Sweden.

The application fee is SEK 900, and the cost of tuition varies between SEK 50,000 and SEK 72,500 per semester, depending on the programme.

If you are a citizen of a country within the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you are not required to pay application or tuition fees to study in Sweden.

Some non-EU/EEA students are exempt from paying application and tuition fees. Detailed information about fee exemption can be found on universityadmissions.se.

Change of payment status

If a fee-paying student’s residency status changes during their studies (e.g. they are granted European citizenship), they must submit documentation to Uppsala University to certify the change.

Legal background

According to the Regulation on application and tuition fees at universities and colleges (SFS 2010:543 and 2011:303), citizens from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, also referred to as third-country students, shall in certain cases pay a fee for their higher education.

Fees for current students

Payment of tuition fees

Tuition fees are paid one semester at a time and must be received one month before the start of semester. You will receive an invoice to your student email account before payment must be made. Payment of the tuition fee is made by bank transfer or credit card. See detailed information about payment of tuition fees and reimbursement.

Current students who fail to pay the stipulated tuition fee will be put on academic suspension.

Change in study plan

Every Bachelor's and Master's programme has a study plan. As a fee-paying student at Uppsala University you have to follow this study plan. If you for some reason need to make a change in your study plan, it is important that you contact your programme coordinator and inform the tuition fee coordinator.

Reduction of tuition fee

If you have previously obtained credits, which can be used in your degree, it might be possible to pay a reduced tuition fee your last semester. Please contact your programme coordinator and the tuition fee coordinators to discuss your options.

Studies abroad

If your programme contains studies abroad or you wish to take part in an exchange programme during your time at Uppsala University, you are still required to pay tuition for the period of time concerned.

Study leave

All students have the right to apply for leave of studies. For more information, please contact your programme coordinator. You are not required to pay tuition (unless you enrol in freestanding courses) during your leave.
