Decisions and guidelines

Selectable program course, Nursing Programme, term 5, Uppsala University.
Independent course for other participants according to the eligibility requirement upon availability.
Consists of theoretical studies during study weeks 11-15.
The course is entirely IT- based.
The course contents Care Science 4,5 hp and Medical Science 3 hp.
Teaching language is swedish. The course will be given if required in English.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student will be able to:

  • Analyse and assess factors that impact the health of children, women and families nationally and globally
  • Analyse, assess and plan caregiving, incorporating perspectives based on scientific, ethical, national and global aspects, human rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child


Three themes will be elucidated from a national and global perspective:

The rights of children and young people, human equality and gender equality and their impact on health
Ill health and the promotion of health in children and young people: protective factors and risk factors, existential pain, children's vulnerabilities and needs
Ill health and the promotion of health in connection with childbirth and its impact on the child and the woman: maternal healthcare, neonate care, children’s health, growth and nutrition


Web lectures in each theme.
Group work.
Discussion forum on the student portal within each theme.
An assignment of writing a PM.
Seminars/lecture physical or by Adobe Connect.
Literature including policy documents and articles.
The student should have access to a computer with webcam, headphones and Internet connection with good performance.

Teaching takes place at full time for five weeks.
Study week 1-3: Web lectures and live lectures that illustrate each theme from a national and global perspective in order to highlight similarities and differences. Participate in discussion forums by making entries in the Student portal's discussion forums.
Study week 4: Write a PM.
Study week 5: Prepare the seminar. Participate in the seminar physically or via Adobe Connect.


Examination of the seminar performance, assignment of writing a PM and the review of a PM. Examination is done according to the guidelines of the nursing programme with a maximum of 5 times per student.
