Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain basic relationships between structure and properties of metallic, ceramic and polymeric materials as well as composites,
- make qualitative comparisons between materials and application areas for the most common technical materials in the various materials categories,
- interpret and use binary phase diagrams,
- explain the underlying mechanisms for hardening of metals,
- describe various methods for testing material properties.
Content
Materials structure and deformation mechanisms. Correlations between atomic bonds, microstructure and macroscopic properties. Phase diagrams. Materials testing. Properties and applications of technical materials in all materials categories: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Instruction
Lectures, exercise classes, visit at an industrial company and laboratory exercises.
Assessment
Written test at the end of the course. . Reports.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
