Participation in Introduction to Sustainable Destination Development. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- analyse and critically evaluate the special conditions for entrepreneurship in the tourism industry from a sustainability perspective,
- account for the meaning of effectuation as an entrepreneurial action strategy, especially in the tourism industry and from a sustainability perspective,
- account for and problematise the pros and cons of working in local networks of actors - authorities, organisations and companies,
- describe different ways of dealing with value and value creation from a particular ethical perspective and sustainability perspective;
- explain how to handle accounting and financial management in tourism companies,
- account for basic legal prerequisites and regulatons for business activities in the tourism industry.
The course addresses the following moments:
- effectuation as an action strategy and theoretical perspective on entrepreneurship.
- different perspectives on service companies and business development, especially from a sustainability perspective.
- to analyse markets and identify business opportunities in the tourism industry, especially from a sustainability perspective.
- to establish and develop a service-providing organisation, especially from a sustainability perspective.
- customer and staff critical role and interaction in service companies, especially from a sustainability perspective?
- to develop sustainable business in collaboration with local and regional actors, including authorities and other major organisations.
- ethical perspective on entrepreneurship in the tourism industry, especially from a sustainability perspective.
- basic accounting and financial management in service companies.
- legal basis for business activities especially in the tourism industry.
- to collaborate with subcontractors and partners with regards to various management and management functions within the company.
Lectures, seminars and tutorials. A major project work carried out in groups. An important feature is guest lectures and cases taken from local companies as well as representatives of the visiting industry, both nationally and globally.
Written exam (5 credits) as well as written and oral group assignments (2.5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
