Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain basic relationships between structure and properties for metallic, ceramic, polymeric and compositematerials,
- make qualitative comparisons between materials and indicate the application areas ofthe most common engineering materials in the different clasases of materials ,
- interpret and use binary phase diagrams,
- describe the underlying mechanisms for hardening of metals,
- describe the different methods of testing materials .
Content
Material structure and deformation mechanisms. Relationship between atomic bonds, microstructure and macroscopic properties. Phase diagrams. Materials testing. Properties and applications of engineering materials in all classes of materials : metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Instruction
Lectures, exercise classes, visit at an industrial company and laboratory exercises.
Assessment
Written exam (4 credits). Laboratory reports (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
