Organisation - Master's Programme in Business and Management
Academic year 2023/2024

- 120 credits
- Autumn 2023, Uppsala, 100%, Campus
- Programme syllabus
In the Master's Programme in Business and Management, specialising in Organisation, you will study how modern expectations and demands of the environment are managed in modern organisations. Ethical behaviour, social and environmental responsibility, transparency and sustainability of organisations are central elements. The specialisation prepares you for a role as a responsible decision-maker, consultant, researcher, lobbyist, intelligence analyst and communication specialist.
Why this programme?
Virtually all social activities - economic, political, cultural and other - are carried out within and between organisations. The programme is designed for those who want to develop their ability to understand and responsibly manage organisations, the world around them, and the relationships that arise between them.
It provides the tools to understand, analyse changes in, and act on the way organisations are governed - for example, how popular models of governance are created and disseminated, how new types of professional actors and professional groups operate within and between organisations, and how these groups affect the regulatory landscape within which organisations operate.
Empirically, we address questions about how today's organisations and organising can respond to the major societal and planetary changes we as a society are facing, and how various roles within organisations, can help to address the need to change our world in a more sustainable direction.
During the programme, you will be trained to make and communicate responsible decisions, to produce decision-making documents, advice and recommendations, and to communicate and discuss these.
Programme benefits include
- Courses that offer a solid theoretical foundation and practical experience, combining practical tasks and case studies with Uppsala University's strong research tradition.
- Extensive and varied teaching formats, including student-led discussions and close contact with researchers and practitioners who are experts in different fields.
- Optional internship or the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities.
The specialisation is run by the Department of Business Studies, home to researchers who lead their fields in the areas of international business, corporate entrepreneurship, industrial marketing, institutional analysis and more. You will also benefit from Sweden's stellar reputation for social responsibility - values that inform all of our Master's programmes.

How did you choose your programme?
Before this, I studied International Business, and information systems. I chose this programme both because of the University and because of the different subjects the specialisation offers. I’m highly interested in organisational development and corporate impact on society. I also think that sustainability is really important, and this specialisation focuses on sustainability in almost every course, which is a big plus for me. I do also like the variation of the teaching methods.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
The people! The friends and people I’ve met and gotten to know through both the University and through the nation life is a great part of my life. I’ve gained close friends, as well as been inspired by professors and lecturers. Uppsala University offers great opportunities to meet and get to know people from different backgrounds, and I feel as I’ve learnt something from each and everyone I’ve met.
What is most challenging?
I feel that accepting that you’re not always going to be on top is a challenge. It’s easy to get stuck thinking everything has to be perfect, but try to think that you’ll make a comeback next time. Getting through old course literature can also be a challenge! A lot of the old theories and models we use, even today, are dated decades ago and the original scripts aren’t always easy to understand at first glance. It is essential to give yourself time to focus on the material, and to discuss it with course mates – it really helps.
Describe the student life!
Student life is really one of the best things about studying! The student unions and student organisations, connected to different departments, make it possible to get active in study-related questions. The nations, and of course the student organisations, makes it easy to get to know other students and to socialise with students from other areas of study. There’s something for everyone – whether you’re interested in sports, music, partying, cooking, or study-related questions.
What is your reason for studying, and your ultimate goal?
I want to get a good stable theoretical ground to stand on when venturing out into working life. We study a broad spectrum of courses with several different perspectives and angles of approaches, applied to different practical examples and cases, which makes your analytical ability develop. I hope to bring it with me outside my studies, as well.
Do you have any tips for future students?
If you have a genuine interest in organisational processes, business development and management, then I think this programme will be extra interesting and exciting. I like that the programme also implements different perspectives of sustainability in multiple courses. So, if you’re curious about how that, and how it works in practice, then I think this programme is right for you! I also think that it is important to talk during seminars, and ask questions if you don’t understand – there’s more often than not someone else wondering the same thing. To use study techniques that suite you, and not your friends, is also a given.
Three quick questions:
What was your favourite place in Uppsala?
The nations dance floors… Eko-parken (the park behind campus Ekonomikum). All the cosy spots by the Fyris river! And the hill by the castle (“slottsbacken”) – perfect for both interval training and sleigh rides on trash bags! Hard to pick just one…
What is your favourite student tradition at Uppsala University?
Day parties – everything from brunch after/before a ball to October fest!
What was the best place to study?
The “Master's room” (Digital Library) at Campus Ekonomikum. There are adjustable desks and very comfortable couches!
Autumn 2021.
Programme
The specialisation in organisation is based on both classical and modern ideas of organisational theory, giving you a solid theoretical framework to understand how firms really work. You will also have the opportunity to put theory into practice with real-world experience through special projects and an optional internship. The programme will also take an in-depth look at how actors such as consultants, lobbyists, think-tanks and media, function and influence modern organisations, and the role they play in effecting both organisation-specific and societal change.
The programme follows a fixed study route, which means that courses must be taken in the prescribed order. During your first year, you will take courses with all the students in the Master's programme, covering strategy, societal challenges such as digitalisation, globalisation and sustainability, scientific method, business theories and leadership. You will then take courses that are specific to your organisation's specialisation. These courses are tied together by a theme we call 'Responsible management. This is a perspective in which ethical behaviour, social and environmental responsibility, transparency and sustainability of organisations are central elements. If you choose to finish your studies after one year, you will instead complete a 15-credit Master's thesis in the second semester.
In your third semester, you will choose between an internship at a commercial organisation, elective courses at Uppsala University, or an international exchange at one of our partner universities around the world.
You will spend the fourth and final semester writing your 30-credit Master's thesis. It is an in-depth study on a topic in the field of organisation.
