In the Master's Programme in Languages, specialising in German you can study various aspects of the German language, such as linguistics, literature and philology. German is spoken by about 100 million people in Europe and is therefore one of the most important language in the EU.

Why this programme?

The Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University has Sweden's broadest range of education in languages and language-related subjects. You choose to specialise in one of the main field of studies. It can be language, literature, linguistics and more.

Courses from other faculties can also be included in your degree to further specialise your education. The programme gives you the opportunity to read work-oriented courses specially designed for language students. The studies will also prepare you for future research, making you eligible for doctoral studies.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Arts (120 credits) in German. After one year of study, it may also be possible to obtain a Master of Arts (60 credits) in German.

Programme

The programme include courses and independent degree projects. During the first year, a series of work-oriented seminar and study visits are common to all students in the programme.

The first term includes two programme-based courses - a course in theory and method as well as a course with work-oriented lectures and study visits. In addition, courses are taught in German.

The second term is devoted to specialisation in German, 15 credits. The remaining 15 credits consist of a programme-wide methodology course (7.5 credits) and an elective course in German or another subject (7.5 credits).

The third and fourth terms are devoted to independent degree projects comprising 15 or 30 credits and elective courses in German or other subjects. Opportunities for internships comprising 7.5 credits or 15 credits are available.

Learning experience

Language of instruction is German and English.

Some of the courses may require compulsory attendance. Studies conducted at a foreign university may be included in the degree. During the first semester of the programme, a seminar series is held with invited guest lecturers representing different professions with language in focus. On a seminar, you present your ideas and discuss with your classmates regarding a course book or other study material that you are required to read before the seminar; while the teacher usually only moderates the discussion. The aim is to develop critical thinking and collaborative skills. All the students are expected to be active participants in all forms of discussions.

In addition to the seminars, there are also visits to workplaces related to a future career. The seminars and the workplace-visits are common for all the students in the programme and provide valuable insight into the professional life and opportunity to make personal contacts. There are opportunities for internships.

Some of the courses are taught as distance courses with online seminars.

Career

Completing the Master's Programme in Language, specialising in German, will help you to develop intellectually, refining your research and analytical skills in ways that will prepare you either for doctoral study or for employment beyond the university in a wide array of fields.

About 100 million people, mainly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, speak German but there are German-speaking groups in other countries, for example in Romania, the Czech Republic and Russia. With a Master's degree in German, you will be well equipped for advanced tasks in Europe.

Academic requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be German.

Language requirements

Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Selection: Higher education credits (maximum 285 credits).

Tuition fee-paying students and non-paying students are admitted on the same grounds but in different selection groups.

If you are not a citizen of a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland, you are required to pay application and tuition fees.
