The Master's Programme in Information Systems gives you in-depth understanding of digitalisation and designing for digital practice. Digital practice concerns how working methods, behaviours, and activities are influenced by digitalisation. This is an internationally competitive programme, with a focus on information systems development. It will give you the skills needed to work in this area or continue on a research career path.

The rapidly increasing digitalisation of society involves major changes for individuals, organisations and society. As a result, future information systems graduates must be equipped and prepared to tackle these challenges. The Master's Programme in Information Systems provides you with expertise in management and development of digital practices, focusing on systems development based upon organisational requirements. In other words, the programme covers the fundamentals of how work is undertaken in a digital environment. This includes courses on digitalisation and its effects, infrastructure and advanced software engineering methods for creating complex information systems.
You will learn how systems and applications interact with individuals and groups in the various activities performed in organisations today. You will be challenged with courses on big data and machine learning. You will master how to develop systems that are based on both clients' and users' needs, and to do so in teams. You will practice adopting scientific approaches to practical problem solving.
During the programme you can expect to:

understand the organisational context and need for information systems and system development.
Information systems is an exciting and dynamic field and the Master's Programme in Information Systems focuses on the latest developments and research in the IT field, set in one of the most digitalised societies in the world today, and is taught by instructors at the very cutting edge of research and practice.
Student profile You have a strong foundation in information systems or computer science and realise that a holistic view of information systems includes users and organisations as well as technology. You are interested in digitalisation and how it is affecting and will affect individuals, organisations, and society. You might even have an interest in a specific area in which information systems are particularly important.
You are able to critically analyse and reflect on problems and are creative and innovative enough to come up with your own ideas. You enjoy problem solving and team work and your natural curiosity drives you to seek a deeper understanding, not just to learn the facts.
A future PhD education is a possibility you may have thought about and you would value the opportunity to get in closer contact with current research and the craft of writing a thesis.
The programme leads to a Master of Social Science (120 credits) with Information Systems as the main field of study.
The programme is built around three central themes:
complex information systems (in courses relating to digital infrastructure, software engineering, machine learning and big data)
the systems development process (in courses relating to software engineering and agile development methods), and
the organisational context of information systems and system development (in courses relating to digitalisation, digital practise, and business value of IT).
During the first semester, you will study digitalisation and its effects on individuals, organisations, and society. You will be introduced to digital practices, i.e., how to organise work in an increasingly digitalised environment, including systems development practices, information and knowledge modelling, designing for usability, change management, and project management and working in teams.
During the second semester, you will learn about systematic design and development of complex IT systems as well as digital infrastructure and its implications for systems development.
During the third semester, you will learn about artificial intelligence and machine learning, including ethical and social implications. You will also take a course on business value creation using digital technologies, which will introduce how IT can be used for strategic advantage. In the final term, you will apply your knowledge to carry out a degree project and write your Master's thesis.
The programme integrates research methodology in all courses, allowing you to learn to apply cutting-edge scientific methods by practising on practical problems. You will also hone your skills in oral and written scientific communication throughout all courses within the programme.
The programme is offered in Uppsala and teaching consists of lectures, lessons, and seminars, which are all taught in English. More practically oriented teaching is laboratory lessons and supervision of assignments and essays.
Examination of courses takes place in the form of written tests, seminars and assignments. Completed courses are graded pass or pass with distinction.

Requirements: Academic requirements A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 90 credits in information systems or computer science or a similar field of study.
Language requirements All applicants need to verify English language proficiency that corresponds to English studies at upper secondary (high school) level in Sweden ("English 6"). This can be done in a number of ways, including through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, or through previous upper secondary (high school) or university studies. The minimum test scores are:
IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90
