Application

The Master's Programme in Renewable Electricity Production offers you an education in electrical power systems and renewable electricity generation. The electric grid in the world is facing a great shift, and the electric transmission system is accommodating an increasing share of renewable energy sources. Qualified professionals in the energy field are in high demand and this programme will help you develop an attractive profile for the labour market.

Why this programme?

Are you interested in how technology can contribute to sustainability and the environment? Do you want to mix traditional engineering skills with current research in the area of electric power? Then the Master's Programme in Renewable Electricity Production is the right choice for you. Uppsala University's energy research is world-leading in many areas and there is close cooperation between research and industry.

You will be put in contact with some of the main actors in the Swedish industry through study visits and guest lectures. You will also have opportunities for a Master's thesis and project courses in industry and research groups.

During the programme you can expect to:

  • mix traditional engineering skills with current research in the area of electric power generation (wind, wave, hydro and solar),
  • gain insights into research and industry perspectives,
  • build a network of potential employers during training, both in academia and industry,
  • gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of renewable electricity.

By the time you graduate, you will be able to:

  • perform power system analysis of transport and distribution electrical systems,
  • dimension the new components in the electric grid including renewable energy sources, electric vehicles and energy storage systems,
  • analyse economic aspects of renewable electricity production,
  • design wind and wave power plants and the electric systems to connect them to the grid.

Technical skills are important, but also soft skills such as presentation technique and argumentation. Project management is also part of the programme. These will be very useful during your studies and for your professional career.

Student profile

You have a strong foundation in electrical engineering and might also have practical experience working in a relevant field after earning your Bachelor's degree. Your social skills are good and you expect to contribute as much to the educational experience of others as you expect to learn from their previous experiences and knowledge.

A future PhD education is a possibility you might have thought about, but working right after graduation is also something you are considering.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) with Renewable Energy Production as the main field of study.

Name: Mahir Mahdee
From: Bangladesh
Studying: Master’s Programme in Renewable Electricity Production

Why did you choose to come and study in Sweden?
– I have always been concerned about sustainability and a greener future and Sweden being one of the most sustainable countries in the world, I believed this place could provide me with what I wanted to learn.

Why did you choose to study this programme?
– I had this fascination towards renewable energy and I knew that this field would play a major role in the future electricity market. We all know that global warming is a big issue now and generating electricity from renewable resources could be one of the major responses to mitigate such climate damage. This programme seemed to be exciting where you got to learn both the technology and its impact towards the environment.

How is it like to study at a university in Sweden?
– So much fun! Naturally, studies have been challenging but no one here forces you to study hard and you need to do that on your own responsibility. My experience I would say is that everyone is friendly and helpful and you will always find motivation and good companions to study with.

What is best about studying at Uppsala University?
– The University has high-quality education with comprehensive libraries and well-equipped labs. Most of its faculty members have been around for a very long time and thus have structured most of the courses in a pretty decent way. The scope for quality research is also one of the best things the University has to offer.

How does a normal day look like for you?
– Basically, the mornings would be occupied with one or two lectures. Then we have a lunch break at noon followed by some more lessons or labs. After school, I would probably stay back with some friends for a while to finish up some homework or go for a walk to relax if I have a hectic schedule.

What has been the most fun and interesting so far?
– I love the tradition of Swedish fika where you get to try some classic Swedish treats every now and then. The corridor parties every weekend with different unique themes has been the most interesting thing so far!

What is typical for your programme?
– We were exposed to both practical and theoretical studies. We have worked a lot on projects and had study visits where we got the flavour of the real-life experience of job markets.

How was it coming to Sweden for the first time?
– I was excited because it was the first time I came to Europe. The culture, its art, and everything were pretty new to me and I was amazed by the hospitality of people living here.

How did you meet and get to know new people?
– I was always an extrovert person and it was pretty easy for me to make friends as soon as I came to Sweden. Uppsala University also has 13 student nations where the nations offer different fun activities for everyone around Uppsala.

What is your future goal with your education?
– I would love to imply my skills to do something good for the benefit of people of my country and in a way I would like to help humanity by providing them with solutions that could ease their future energy crisis.

What do you do besides your studies?
– I am actively involved in volunteering activities with organisations in and outside of school. I also love cooking and whenever I get time, I try out making new food items and make my friends taste my dish.

Three quick questions
Favourite place in Uppsala?
– It would probably be Håga mound. If the weather is nice, I would go there for an evening walk and sit and watch the sunset.

Best student tradition at Uppsala University?
– The ‘Flogsta scream’ in the university student housing area Flogsta, where every night at 22:00, all the students come out to the balcony and scream their lungs out!

What do you do in five years?
– I would possibly be working in a big organisation and also be thinking of starting up my own business related to my field.
