You will achieve a more thorough understanding of the logical and conceptual relationships between the mathematical concepts that you have previously studied. You will see these concepts in a more general and modern context, as well as studying them in greater detail and with greater depth. This way, your knowledge in mathematics will become both more general and more useful.
Student profile You have a strong foundation and a deep interest in mathematics and enjoy the challenge that studying mathematics at higher level provides. You are extremely motivated and prepared to invest a great amount of time and energy in your studies. English is no problem for you and you understand that studying mathematics at Uppsala University will take a lot of hard work and analytical thinking. You want an educational experience that challenges you.
A future PhD education is definitely a possibility you have thought about and you would value an opportunity to get in closer contact with current research. Even if you are thinking about a career outside of academia, for example in finance where mathematicians are in high demand, you believe that PhD studies will take you further on that path as well. Therefore you are looking for a Master's degree that also makes you competitive if you decide to apply for PhD studies after graduation.
You are free to choose among courses in analysis, algebra, geometry and probability theory. There is also a possibility to take some courses from other areas of science and technology. The final semester of the programme consists of a degree project.
Instruction is conducted mainly in the form of lectures, tutorials and seminars, and the language is English. The programme takes place in Uppsala.
The tutors belong to the various research groups at the Department of Mathematics. These groups are very active and hold regular seminars where Master's students are welcome to attend.
Faculty and research The mathematical research in Uppsala has traditionally been dominated by analysis. You may have heard of Lennart Carleson who was awarded the Abel Prize or Arne Beurling who cracked the coding machine Geheimfernschreiber during World War II. They were both very prominent in harmonic analysis. Another strong area of research in Uppsala at the time was differential geometry.
During the 1990's an internationalisation took place and our research has grown since, both in terms of the number of researchers and research areas. Financial mathematics came to Uppsala right after the internationalisation process began, and today we have both education and research in financial mathematics.
If you want to pursue a career in mathematical research, this specialisation is the right way to go. Many of our alumni who have obtained a Master's degree in Mathematics have continued to graduate studies, both in Sweden and abroad.
If you choose to work outside academia, there are good prospects for a successful career, especially if you broaden your education with courses in other areas. Our alumni work as analysts, data scientists, actuaries, system developers etc.
Mathematical skills are necessary in all industries where large amounts of information need to be processed. If you don't know what mathematicians outside academia do, it's probably because mathematicians usually have other titles. Career support The Department of Mathematics arranges a career day for mathematicians once a year. There, math students meet professional mathematicians who tell about their career paths. For this programme, besides the general supporting documents, you also need to submit one programme-specific document: a statement of purpose.
Requirements: Academic requirements A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 90 credits in mathematics.
Language requirements Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Students are selected based on:
a total appraisal of quantity and quality of previous university studies; and
a statement of purpose (1 page).
If you are not a citizen of a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland, you are required to pay application and tuition fees. All admitted and conditionally admitted students are welcome to the introductory meeting on 23 August, 2021, at 1:15 p.m in the Ångström Laboratory Lecture Hall 2002. This lecture hall is located on the ground floor, in the corridor furthest to the north. At this meeting, you will receive relevant information about your studies.

If you want to study other courses than the ones in the programme outline
It is possible to choose other courses than the ones in the programme outline, as long as they are relevant to the programme and as long as they can be included in a Master's degree in mathematics or financial mathematics. Registration, conditionally admitted students
If you are conditionally admitted, please bring your Bachelor's diploma or a certified copy to the introductory meeting. This is because you have to show that you fulfill the requirements before you can register to the programme.
