DIGITIZING MAJINA: PROVIDING VISIBILITY TO THE KHANGA’S ORAL LITERARY MESSAGES

This seminar aims to demonstrate the importance of creating metadata on the jina, as currently this information exists only in the personal collections of Khanga with messages that appeal to interested individuals. By capturing, cataloguing and classifying majina, this project in ALMEDA will ensure that the cultural heritage of the majina will be maintained for future generations and for future research. . The jina components include wise sayings (misemo) and proverbs (methali), which are subgenres of the Oral Literary forms among the Swahili, categorized under everyday expressions meant to direct, appreciate, warn and educate both the current and younger generations, especially women and girls.
